LG Electronics followed by Samsung Electronics to expand its 'pet home appliance' market

On May 4th, Samsung Electronics released an air purifier exclusively for pet care that is optimized for families with pets. The new product removes fur and smell from pets through Samsung's specialized filter technology. It features a "extractive filter" that removes more than 99 percent of the smell of pets.

■ Petconomy (pet+ecomedy, pet-related industry) and Pet-Family (people who think of pets as family members)

With the emergence of new words such as "pet+ecomedy" and "pet+family," the home appliance industry is jumping into related markets from mid-sized companies to large companies.

■ Companies specializing in rice cookers and fans, transforming into pet appliances

In particular, mid-sized home appliance makers looking for future growth engines are moving fast. Companies that have strong images of their main products such as rice cookers and fans are launching brands specializing in pets. Analysts say it is a strategy to strengthen the corporate image of comprehensive home appliances.

Cuckoo launched its pet home appliance brand "Nello" last year and launched "Pet Air Shower and Dry Room." Through Nello, Cuckoo plans to develop products exclusively for pets with advice from experts such as pet behavior experts and veterinarians.
E-Land said Monday that it will start selling its Nello product, a pet specialty brand of Cuckoo.

On the 29th, Cuckoo launched "Nello NH-A10XSB/SB/MB" following the pet dry room. This product minimizes pressure and tightening on the neck and chest when a pet moves wearing harnesses, so it has a comfortable fit and a hug-type design that covers its entire body 360 degrees, which gives it a sense of stability.

Shinil launched its pet home appliance brand "Furby" in 2017. Furby is expanding its product line, including a bathtub for pets, an automatic foot washing machine for pets, and an IoT pet antibacterial deodorizer. In addition, the company plans to launch toys and cat towers for cats.

■ Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics are competing at premium prices.

As the market grows, Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics are also strengthening their pet home appliance businesses in earnest. It is expanding its product line by releasing home appliances equipped with animal-specific functions. Many products, such as air purifiers and vacuum cleaners, have functions to relieve discomfort caused by animal hair.

Samsung's pet care air purifier lineup, launched by Samsung Electronics on the same day, features 99 percent deodorization efficiency for methyl Mercaptan, isovaleraldehyde and Nonal, which are related to the smell of pets, feces and feed.

Samsung's pet care air purifier is also equipped with a "dual pet extreme filter" to effectively remove both fur and fine dust from pets. In addition, the use of the "pet-only mode" increases the amount of wind, helping to effectively collect hairs flying in the air.

Lee Ki-ho, executive vice president of strategic marketing team at Samsung Electronics' home appliance division, explained, "We applied specialized technology to pets to Samsung's air purifiers, which have been greatly loved by consumers, for 'pet-pam people' who consider pets as family members."

LG Electronics also launched an air purifier for those who raise pets last year. Last year, LG Electronics unveiled its "Puricare 360-degree air purifier pet," which added a total harmful gas photocatalyst filter, pet mode and attached microfiber specialized for pet fur.

It also produced tangible results. LG Electronics explained that sales of the Puricare 360-degree air purifier pet, an air purifier exclusively for pets, accounted for nearly 40 percent of the total sales of Puricare 360-degree air purifiers as of last year.

"Puricare 360-degree pet air purifiers are steadily gaining popularity from pets," said an official at LG Electronics. "With this, customers who are recognized as the best performance air purifiers and do not raise pets are also increasing their choices."
